34m Motor Yacht Akiko’s Complete Refit Success at GCCM
What happens when precision project management meets world-class craftsmanship? The recent completion of motor yacht Akiko’s extensive refit at Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) provides a compelling example. This comprehensive four-month transformation showcases exactly why GCCM has earned recognition as Australia’s most experienced and awarded marine facility, bringing together over 90 specialist marine businesses under one roof.
Comprehensive Refit Excellence
The 34.18-metre Alloy motor yacht Akiko underwent a remarkable transformation that touched every aspect of the vessel. With Baily Marine Yacht Consulting managing the project coordination, the Superyacht-Ready facilities at GCCM proved their worth in supporting complex, multi-faceted marine projects.
The scope of work demonstrates the facility’s capability to handle sophisticated marine engineering challenges:
• Comprehensive service addressing important areas of the Air Conditioning system
• Owner’s stateroom refit with conversion of manual sliding doors to automated electric systems
• Full soft furnishing refresh throughout interior and exterior spaces
• Aft teak decking upgrade and swim platform modifications
Expert Marine Trades Working Together
Gold Coast City Marina is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and what sets GCCM apart is the founding idea to create a one-stop shop for all boats. Twenty-five years ago, the Gay and Leigh-Smith families conceived this visionary idea, and the Coomera Marine Precinct is now the largest marine precinct in the Southern Hemisphere.
It provides a seamless collaboration between specialist marine businesses, all of which can be found at GCCM. Workshop 28 handled interior upgrades, whilst Pacific Trim refreshed all soft furnishings. Wrap It Marine addressed vinyl repairs and added interior detailing enhancements, showcasing the depth of expertise available on-site.
Mechanical and structural work proved equally impressive. Sweep Marine Services undertook tank maintenance and complete aft lazarette repainting, applying new paint systems to all bilges. The installation of an Opacmare transformer (provided by Aquamare) required significant aft swim platform modifications, expertly completed by Lumark, and the aft teak was upgraded by Timber by Design, who also worked on the swim platform.
The technical complexity continued with Transmarine Asia Pacific handling generator engineering, Watson Marine Engineering managing running gear maintenance, and Coastal Marine executing comprehensive electrical upgrades.
This coordination between multiple specialists demonstrates why the Gold Coast location has become synonymous with quality marine services.

Trades Proximity Breeds Success
“GCCM is Australia’s most comprehensive and awarded marine facility with over 90 leading marine businesses working together in the shipyard.” Says Matt Baily, from Baily Marine, who managed the project with Akiko’s Captain. “This proximity of expert trades enabled the refit to be completed on time and within budget – a testament to efficient project management and coordinated expertise”.
The success of Akiko’s transformation illustrates perfectly why discerning yacht owners choose GCCM for complex refits. From initial planning through to final delivery, the facility’s integrated approach ensures seamless execution without compromising quality or timeline.
